2024 UESCA Schedule of Events
This schedule is tentative and subject to change.
- Conference Check-In will occur between 7am – 9am on Thursday (if attending the optional Business of Coaching Day) and Friday (for all others), with the sessions starting at 9am on each day of the conference
- Check-In is located in front of the Heritage Ballroom (near sections B and C)
- Sessions will end at approximately 4:30pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and at 12:30pm on Sunday
Thursday – September 26, 2024 (Optional Add-On)
Thursday is an optional add-on! This day is all about the business side of coaching and is an ideal add-on for endurance coaches or anyone interested in the business side of running a coaching business.
7:00 – 9:00am: Registration Check-In
The check-in area will be in front of the Heritage Ballroom (near sections B and C). The front desk staff will direct you to the conference room. Your swag bag, as well as your lanyard will be supplied at this time. Please note, no ‘day of’ registrations will be allowed.
9:00 – 9:10am: Welcome
9:10 – 10:00am: Pitching Media
Ashley Mateo
One of the best ways to get noticed is to appear in the media. In this session, award-winning journalist and editor, Ashley Mateo will discuss effective strategies to pitch media to increase your visibility.
10:20 – 11:10am: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome
Dr. Justin Ross
It is not uncommon for new coaches to suffer from imposter syndrome due to their inexperience. Licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Justin Ross will discuss what imposter syndrome is, and how to overcome it.
11:30 – 12:20pm: Common Mistakes Starting a Business
Ryan Frankel
There are several mistakes that new business owners often make that can substantially impact their forward momentum. In this session, seasoned serial entrepreneur Ryan Frankel discusses these mistakes, and how to avoid them. And yes… he’s been on Shark Tank!
12:20 – 1:10pm: Lunch

1:10 – 2:00pm: Effective Communication with Athletes
Dr. Lawrence van Lingen
The hallmark of a great coach is not just in their ability to get results, but to be able to communicate effectively with their athletes. Dr. Lawrence van Lingen works with world class athletes such as Taylor Knibb, Jan Frodeno, Flora Duffy and many more. In this session, Dr. van Lingen will discuss how to communicate effectively with athletes.
2:20 – 3:10pm: Building and Scaling Your Coaching Practice (Panel)
Coach Jason Koop, Coach Faith Raymond Strafach MS, Coach and Race Director Mandy Mullen
In this panel, seasoned coaches, Jason Koop, Mandy Mullen and Faith Raymond Strafach will discuss what it takes to start, grow and effectively manage your coaching practice.
3:30 – 4:20pm: Website Design and SEO Strategies
Christine Otten
Starting a coaching business can be a scary process. For many, the most daunting part is the technology aspect. In this session, seasoned web developer, Christine Otten will discuss options for website design and effective and actionable search engine optimization (SEO) strategies.
Friday – September 27, 2024

9:10 – 10:00am: Psychology of Athlete Injuries
Dr. Harlan Austin
Injury is typically viewed through the lens of being solely a physical issue. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In this session, licensed psychologist, Dr. Harlan Austin discusses the impact that injuries have from a psychological point of view.
10:20 – 11:10am: Software Analytics
Robby Ketchell
Robby Ketchell is a data scientist who was a key member of the performance team for Eliud Kipchoge’s INEOS 1:59 Challenge. In this session, Robby discusses analytics as it pertains to increasing performance and identifying actionable areas.
11:30 – 12:20pm: Application of Physiological Testing
Renee Eastman
There are several popular physiological tests that are often misunderstood, specifically with respect to how to apply the results from these tests. Exercise physiologist, Renee Eastman will discuss these tests, as well as how to appropriately apply the results.
12:20 – 1:10pm: Lunch

Lunch and Learn Session (Optional) – Lever Movement (www.levermovement.com) will be hosting a ‘Lunch and Learn’ in the hotel gym during the lunch hour to demonstrate their innovative product that allows athletes to run at a percentage of their bodyweight.
1:10 – 2:00pm: Female Physiology
Dr. Kirsty Elliott-Sale
Specifically, as it relates to human performance, female physiology is a fairly new area of focus. Due to that, there is a lot of noise and inaccurate information floating around. In this session, Dr. Kirsty Elliott-Sale, one of the foremost experts in female physiology, will discuss the most recent research in this area as it relates to actionable information that you can use.
2:20 – 3:10pm: Gut Microbiome and Training the Gut
Meredith Terranova MS
Long ignored from the standpoint of its effect on human performance, sports nutritionist, Meredith Terranova will discuss the gut microbiome and its relation to endurance sports performance. This was also Meredith’s thesis topic for her Masters in Advanced Nutrition and Human Performance.
3:30 – 4:20pm: Training for Speed
Nell Rojas
There is perhaps no better person to present on how to train for speed than professional runner and coach, Nell Rojas. In this session, Nell will discuss key aspects of the training process that specifically correlate with an increase in running speed.

9:00 – 9:50: If Exercise is Medicine, Is There a Toxic Dose?
Nick Tiller, Ph.D
It is common knowledge that exercise is important for health and therefore it is often viewed as preventative medicine. However, is there such a thing as too much of a good thing? That is what Dr. Nick Tiller will be discussing in this presentation.
10:10 – 11:00am: Running Physiology
Dr. Matt Hanson
In this session, professional triathlete and coach, Dr. Matt Hanson will be discussing the physiology associated with running and more specifically, how to improve your physiological fitness.
11:20am – 12:10pm: Injury Prevention and Management
Nat Collins DPT, Sammie Lewis DPT
If running is synonymous with one thing, it is injury. In this session, running-focused physical therapists, Sammie Lewis and Nat Collins will discuss key factors in preventing injury, as well as managing an injury to enhance recovery.
12:10 – 1:00pm: Lunch

1:00 – 1:50pm: Strength Training (Interactive/Live Demo)
Dominique (Dee) Stasulli
Strength training is a critical part of a runner’s training program but there are a lot of misconceptions about it, as well as a common misunderstanding of how to integrate it with a cardiovascular program. In this session, kinesiologist, and strength and conditioning specialist, Dominique Stasulli will host a live, interactive discussion and demonstration of important strength training concepts.
2:10 – 3:00pm: Zone 2 Training
Dr. Matt Hanson
There is perhaps no hotter topic right now in the endurance sports world than Zone 2 training. This topic is also one of the most misunderstood in terms of physiological development. Dr. Matt Hanson will discuss the physiological adaptations of various ‘zones,’ as well as common misconceptions of Zone 2 training.
3:20 – 4:10pm: Pelvic Floor Importance and Training
Dr. Kelly Thomas
Pelvic floor muscles are often overlooked (i.e., not thought about) when it comes to both running performance and specific strengthening exercises. Pelvic floor specialist and physical therapist, Dr. Kelly Thomas, will discuss the role of pelvic floor muscles as it pertains to running, as well as how to strengthen them.
5:00 – 7:00pm: Social (at Antlers Hotel)
This is your chance to mingle and network with other attendees and presenters (if present). Held at the Antlers Hotel, a cash bar will be available.

On Sunday, you have two choices! You can attend the Ultrarunning Specific Track (specific Ultrarunning application), or the Running Specific Track (general application to running various distances)

9:00 – 9:50am: Are Women Better Ultrarunners Than Men?
Nick Tiller, Ph.D
In this presentation, Dr Nick Tiller reviews what we know so far, draws attention to the performance trends, the physiology that might confer a female advantage, and shows data from the only races where men and women compete in equal numbers.
10:10 – 11:00am: Stage Race Considerations
Molly Forr, Matt Vosburgh
Amongst ultramarathons, stage races are unique in their structure and demands. In this session, ultrarunners Matt Vosburgh and Molly Forr will discuss their strategies for competing in stage races, from the perspective of the athlete, as well as the crew.
11:20 – 12:10pm: Training for 100+ Ultras
Coach Jason Koop
In this session, renowned ultrarunning coach, Jason Koop will discuss common mistakes that individuals make when training for a 100+ mile ultramarathon, as well as specific training considerations for races at these distances.

Robby Ketchell
There are a lot of variables that affect one’s running pace. In this session, Robby Ketchell will specifically discuss external pacing variables (ex: environmental factors) in relation to appreciating these variables and their effect on one’s running performance. Who better to discuss this topic than Robby who was a key member of the performance team for Eliud Kipchoge’s INEOS 1:59 Challenge.
10:10 – 11:00am: Running Form Considerations
Dr. Lawrence van Lingen
Running form with respect to running efficiency/economy is of critical importance to one’s running performance. Dr. Lawrence van Lingen will discuss aspects that influence running form and therefore, things to consider to increase your running efficiency.
11:20 – 12:10pm: The Anatomy of Endurance: Gender Dynamics and Athletic Performance
Nick Tiller, Ph.D
We’re the same species, but to ignore important anatomical and physiological differences between men and women is to fail in our duty to optimize training and performance for both sexes. In this talk, Dr. Nick Tiller will discuss the important differences in male and female bodies, how these relate to performance potential, and how we can adapt training programs to accommodate the differences.
